On January 11th, Iridium announced that Iridium NEXT, the world's highest performance and most sophisticated telecom constellation, was now fully deployed in space. What a milestone for this great company!
Iridium spent $3B to replace its original satellite system, deploying 75 satellites in to low earth orbit (LEO), and making it the largest technology refresh undertaken in space, by any satellite network. Iridium's new constellation is comprised of 66 operational satellites, nine (9) in-orbit spares, and another six (6) ground spares -- and continues to be the only mobile voice and data satellite communications network that covers the entire globe.
Iridium simultaneously launched its new constellation, while seamlessly providing ongoing service to more than 1 million current subscribers -- without missing a beat! Existing Iridium users are already reporting quicker registration and improved voice call reliability.
New Line of Iridium Services
With the satellite launch completed, new services like Iridium Certus Broadband providing faster data speeds and improved voice quality (4.8 kbps equivalent to a cellular voice experience) will usher in a new era of mobile satellite communications. Data speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps will unlock new possibilities in asset tracking, fleet management and telemetry, remote monitoring, email, internet browsing and VPN, file and photo transfer, audio and video streaming, video broadcasting and conferencing, among other intelligent data applications.
